Historic photos of Louisville Ky and environs
Including New Albany, Clarksville, and Jeffersonville, Indiana
About the website
There are very many old photos on the internet and I began saving those I thought would be of general interest to my computer. I tinker with website creation and as more photos were accumulated this site was created in 2014 to give some semblance of order to the photos. This is not a professional or commercial endeavor and none of the photos are my own work. The problem was not so much finding photos but determining which to include that would be of the most interest. I originally intended to post only photos prior to 1960 but there are quite a few after that date.
The geographical areas listed are only a general location of the photos. The areas run together so it was difficult to determine in which location some photos should be placed. I may have misplaced some. "The People" and the "Special" pages contain photos from all geographical areas.
--- The photos were collected from many sources, most from the following sites ---
The U of L Library is an outstanding source for old photographs. Other sources are - Ky Digital Library, KY Historical Society, Indiana Historical Society, The Digital Public Library of America, and the Indiana History Room Archives. The Louisville Metro Archives and Record Center occasionally posts old photos. The Filson Historical Society has many rare photos. Many photos came from Facebook and Pinterest sites.
The source of the photos, if known, are included in the captions. A few may be incorrect. When I began saving photos to my computer, there was no though of creating a website. Most photos came from a search of the U of L Library and I did not list the source. Most photos from Facebook, Search Engines and Pinterest did not include a source. If those photos included the source they were included with the photo. I would guess that the great majority of non-sourced photos came from the depositories listed above. No credit is due to this site if photos are copied.
Check out the "Special" section at the top navigation bar which contains links to old photos of particular interests.
There is also a page in this section with links to other sources of old photographs and information.
Lost Louisville is an interesting site that maps photographs from the University of Louisville Archives and Special Collections depicting buildings that once stood in Louisville.

Navigating the Site
The site contains galleries with large thumbnails. Hovering over a thumbnail opens a caption for that photo. Clicking on any photo opens larger images in a manual slideshow using arrows on the screen or keyboard. Some photos were small and/or poor quality and this is amplified when enlarged for viewing. There are very many images here so some pages may take a few seconds to load. Sorry, but you cannot "Search" this site for photos. I am on a free plan and search is not available.
Weebly was used to build the site. There are several free website builders but I find Weebly the easiest to use. - D. Wachtel
