Werne's Row
On the west side of 4th between Hill St. and Belgravia Court are five houses, four nearly identical Chateauesque mansions and another facing Belgravia Court. The houses were built by jeweler and antiques dealer Joseph Werne in 1895. The architect was F.W. Mowbray. Some reports say that each of his 4 children lived in the 4 red houses but there is no record verifying that.  Werne and his wife reportedly lived in the blue house on the right bordering Belgravia Court but a city directory says they lived at the house on the corner of 4th and Hill and that Dr. William Wathen and his family were the first residents of this home.  Maybe they lived in a different house at different times. The houses are popularly known as Werne's Row.
